Digital TV Transition in USA

Digital TV Transition in USA

The DTV transition in the United States is the switchover from analog to exclusively digital broadcasting of free over-the-air television programming. The transition from analog to digital television has been described by David Rehr, president and CEO of the National Association of Broadcasters, as representing "the most significant advancement of television technology since color TV was introduced." Under the Digital Transition and Public Safety Act of 2005, all broadcasting of analog television in the United States must cease after February 17, 2009.

Impact of Digital TV Transition in USA
Digital TV uses a more efficient transmission technology that allows broadcast stations to offer improved picture and sound quality, as well as offer more programming options through multiple broadcast streams (multicasting). Television stations have been preparing for the transition from analog to DTV since the late 1990s, when they began building digital facilities and airing digital channels alongside regular analog broadcasts. Today, 1,609 out of 1,745 full power television stations nationwide offer digital programming, however, most of the smaller, low-power broadcasters, for whom switching to digital would be cost prohibitive, will still be permitted to transmit in analog for several years to come. Since the majority of US viewership is no longer using over-the-air antennae to receive signals, but has switched to cable and satellite, the impact will be much smaller on current NTSC receivers which will continue to use NTSC content and devices after the cut-off date. Set-top boxes will enable existing over-the-air NTSC only receivers to watch over-the-air ATSC signals.

A major concern is that the broadcast technology used to transmit ATSC signals called 8VSB has problems receiving signal inside buildings and in urban areas, largely due to multipath reception issues which cause annoying ghosting and fading on analog images, but can lead to intermittent signal or no reception at all on ATSC programs. DTV broadcasts exhibit a digital cliff effect, by which viewers will receive either a perfect signal or no signal at all with little or no middle ground. Digital transmissions do contain additional data bits to provide error correction for a finite number of bit errors; once signal quality degrades beyond that point, recovery of the original digital signal becomes impossible.

After the switch from analog to digital broadcasts is complete, analog TVs will be incapable of receiving over-the-air broadcasts without the addition of a set-top converter box. Consequently, a digital-to-analog converter, an electronic device that connects to an analog television, must be used in order to allow the television to receive digital broadcasts. The box may also be called a "set-top" converter, "digital TV adapter" (DTA), or "digital set-top box" (DSTB).

DTV Coupon Program

To assist consumers through the conversion, the U.S. government will take requests from households for up to two $40 coupons for digital-to-analog converter boxes beginning January 1, 2008 via a toll free number or a website. However, these government coupons are limited to an initial sum of $890 million (22,250,000 coupons) with the option to grow to $1.34 billion (33,500,000 coupons), which is far short of the estimated 112 million households (224 million redeemable coupons) in the United States. Nevertheless, not every household will take advantage of the offer, as reports indicate that 1 in 2 households already has a digital TV.

These coupons may be redeemed toward the purchase of a digital-to-analog converter at brick and mortar, on-line, and telephone retailers that have completed the NTIA certification process. Retail prices for the boxes range from $40 to $70 (plus tax and/or shipping); after applying the coupons, the price to the consumer should be between $5 and $40 per box.

What is Digital Television Transition

What is Digital Television Transition

The Digital Television Transition or DTV also called the digital switchover or analogue switchoff, sometimes analog sunset is the process in which analogue television broadcasting is converted to and replaced by digital television. This primarily involves both TV stations and over-the-air viewers, however it also involves content providers like TV networks, and cable TV conversion to digital cable.

In many countries, a simulcast service is operated where a broadcast is made available to viewers in both analog and digital at the same time. As digital becomes more popular, it is likely that the existing analogue services will be removed. In some cases this has already happened, where a broadcaster has offered incentives to viewers to encourage them to switch to digital or simply switched their service regardless of whether they want to switch. In other cases government policies have been introduced to encourage or force the switchover process, especially with regard to terrestrial broadcasts.

Government intervention usually involves providing some funding for broadcasters and, in some cases monetary relief to viewers, to enable a switchover to happen by a given deadline.

The facility with which digital switchover can be achieved depends not only on the size of the area and number of transmitters to be converted, but also on the number of viewers who rely on the analogue signal as their primary or only means of TV reception. In Berlin, for example, most residents were using cable television, so only a small number of households needed the new equipment necessary for digital reception. On the other hand, around 60% of UK households had access to multi-channel television as of summer 2005 [1]. This left around 10 million households who would be forced to convert to another means of receiving television by the time digital switchover reaches their area.

Purpose of Digital Television Transition
  • Higher image and sound quality over analogue broadcast
  • Freeing radio spectrum space, which can then be auctioned off for other purposes.
  • Multiplexed subchannels—which can carry entirely separate programming.

Sky News is a rolling TV news channel providing 24 hour news coverage including the latest breaking news. Currently broadcasting from a news centre in London, the channel provides domestic and international coverage to audiences in the UK as well as around the globe. Sky News started broadcasting on 5 February 1989 as part of the then four-channel Sky Television service. Sky News provides an hourly news radio service to multiple radio networks in the UK. Although the station is targeted at the UK and Ireland, it is carried around the world on a number of services, particularly being favoured by expatriates who want to keep up-to-date with the latest news from home. The channel currently has seven UK bases each with their own correspondents, but the channel can also call upon a wide range of resources and global bureaux provided by its parent company NewsCorp.

Sky News has built its schedule around the main, highly experienced anchors with appointment to view broadcasts regularly being supplemented by landmark broadcasts. When major breaking news reaches the channel, it has more recently started to revert to the old double-headed style with two presenters anchoring. Sky News is famous for its innovations in news broadcasting and regularly wins awards for this and also for its broadcasting in general.

NASA TV Channels Background

NASA TV

NASA TV is the television network of the United States space agency, NASA. NASA TV is broadcast by satellite with a simulcast over the Internet. Local cable television systems across the U.S. may carry the public channel at their discretion, and it is broadcast by some amateur television repeaters. The network has been on the air for more than 25 years.

The network airs a large amount of educational programming, and provides live coverage of an array of manned missions, including the Space Shuttle and ISS, robotic missions, and international launches. The network completed its conversion from analog to digital transmission in late 2005 following the launch of STS-114, ending a period of dual analog/digital broadcasting, although some cable television system may still transmit in analog. The satellite link uses the DVB system for data transmission.

NASA TV Channels

The NASA TV network operates four channels over the air, and the same four channels online. The NASA Public channel provides 24 hour broadcasting of live and recorded events and documentaries aimed toward the general public. The NASA Education channel provides space and science programming for schools, museums and other educational institutions. The NASA Media channel is dedicated to broadcast news organizations and other members of the press, featuring press release video, interviews, mission press conferences and other services. The final is the NASA Mission Operations channel, an encrypted feed for NASA employees.

What is DirecTV ( Known with Direct TV or DTV)

DirecTV is trademarked but I and more people understand Direct TV. DirecTV is a direct broadcast satellite (DBS) service based in El Segundo, California, USA, that was founded in 1990. It transmits digital satellite television and audio to households in the United States, the Caribbean and Latin America except for Mexico. Its primary competitors are Dish Network and cable providers.

DirecTV offers service to bars, restaurants, hotels, dorms, and hospitals through their DirecTV for business service. The company also offered mobile service for cars, boats, and RVs (DirecTV Mobile) as well as aircraft (DirecTV Airborne) in cooperation with Connexion by Boeing.

General information of DirecTV
DirecTV typically uses a fixed 18-inch diameter dish antenna to receive its signals. Traditionally an 18×24-inch elliptical was used; however, most new installations use an 18x20-inch antenna to receive signals from three geostationary satellite positions simultaneously. These systems are becoming more common as DirecTV attempts to squeeze more programming onto their growing systems. DTV is now installing a dish that has five LNBs for HDTV programming and local channels in selected markets. These systems receive signals from up to 5 separate satellites in both the Ku-band and Ka-band. After the new satellite, DirecTV 11, is fully operational DirecTV will stop supplying Dual, Triple, and 5-LNB dishes to all customers and move to Supplying a 3-LNB Ka/Ku dish known as the Slimline3. This dish will see orbital locations 99, 101, and 103 Degrees West. The Slimline3 will be the new standard install dish(For HD and SD programming), while the 5-LNB Slimline will be used for installs in areas that receive local or international programming form orbital locations 110 or 119. The Slimline3 looks nearly identical to its predecessor, aside from a smaller LNB.

The new DirecTV HD channels require an H20/HR20 or H21/HR21 set top box (STB). In order to receive the new HD channels (channels added in late September 2007), viewers must have a B-Band converter installed. If the converter is not installed, viewers can only receive older HD channels (channels 70-99). The HR20 and HR21 are HD digital video recorder (DVR) models.

Some of the new STBs support the ATSC standard (for over-the-air broadcasts); however the H21/HR21 does not have an ATSC tuner, but an external tuner is available. In addition, there is HDMI support for HDTVs with an HDMI port. New STBs also support MPEG-4 standard for HD Programming.

DirecTV is expected to offer new equipment in 2008 such as the AM21, an ATSC add-on for the HR21, the HR21-Pro, an HD-DVR for more recording space (100 hours HD, 400 hours SD), a DVR scheduler, and the HDPC-20, a PC type receiver and DVR for computers.

As of 31 December 2006, DirecTV had approximately 16 million customers in the U.S., 1.4 million in Latin America through its wholly-owned subsidiaries, 1.3 million through its 74% ownership of Sky Brasil Servicos Ltda., and 1.4 million though its 41% ownership of Innova, S. de R.L. de C.V. of Mexico. 2006 revenues were US$14.76 billion.

In late July 2006, DirecTV added several channels to their online guide that are apparently not available to subscribers — these include UK-based Sky Sports One, Sky One and Sky News. The three are channels that are generally available to satellite television viewers in the UK and Ireland, though Sky News has been made available in other countries internationally.

What is Dish Network

DISH Network is a direct broadcast satellite service that provides satellite television, audio programming, and interactive television services to households and businesses in the United States. DISH Network was launched in March 1996, and, along with DirecTV, primarily competes with cable television. They have registered as a Nevada corporation. The corporate office is based at Meridian, Colorado, though the postal designation of nearby Englewood is commonly listed as the company's location in corporate filings and news accounts.

Broadcast technology

DISH Network used standard MPEG-2 for broadcasting and announced as of 1 February 2006, that all new HDTV channels would be available in H.264 format only, while maintaining the current lineup as MPEG-2. DISH Network intends to eventually convert the entire platform to H.264 in order to provide more channels to subscribers.

Both a standard receiver and a receiver with built-in DVR (Digital Video Recorder) are available to subscribers. The DISH Network ViP722 HD DVR, replacement to the ViP622, has received great reviews from CNET and others.

The GoldenEye Satellite

Goldeneye Satellite has developed for long time in development country. It is develop for weapons.(fictional satellite weapon or Laser weapon)

For Jame Bonds series GoldenEye launched 1995 or last 13 years. The name "GoldenEye" was taken from his estate in Jamaica. The original story was conceived and written by Michael France, with later collaboration by several other writers, and was directed by Martin Campbell. In the film, Bond fights to prevent an arms syndicate from using the GoldenEye satellite weapon against London in order to cause a global financial meltdown.

What is Satellite Internet

What satellite internet?

Satellite Internet services are used in locations where terrestrial Internet access is not available and in locations which move frequently. Internet access via satellite is available worldwide, including vessels at sea and mobile land vehicles. There are three types of satellite Internet service.

One-way multicast

One-way multicast satellite Internet systems are used for Internet Protocol (IP) multicast-based data, audio and video distribution. In the U.S., a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) license is required only for the uplink station and no license is required for users. Note that most Internet protocols will not work correctly over one-way access, since they require a return channel. However, Internet content such as web pages can still be distributed over a one-way system by "pushing" them out to local storage at end user sites, though full interactivity is not possible. This is much like TV or radio content which offers little user interface.

Hardware Components

Similar to one-way terrestrial return, satellite Internet access may include interfaces to the public switched telephone network for squawk box applications. An Internet connection is not required, but many applications include an File Transfer Protocol (FTP) server to queue data for broadcast.

One-way with terrestrial return

One-way terrestrial return satellite Internet systems are used with traditional dial-up access to the Internet, with outbound data traveling through a telephone modem, but downloads sent via satellite at a speed near that of broadband Internet access. In the U.S., an FCC license is required for the uplink station only; no license is required for the users.

Another type of 1-way satellite internet system involves the use of General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) for the back-channel. By utilizing a connection that is offered in standard GPRS or EDGE, the upload volume is very low and since this service is not per-time charged, but charged by volume uploaded, users are able to surf and download in broadband speeds. Another view of using GPRS as return would be the mobility when the service is provided by a satellite that transmits in the field of 50 to 53 dBW. Using a 33 cm wide satellite dish, a notebook and a normal GPRS equipped GSM phone, users can get mobile satellite broadband.

Hardware components

The transmitting station (also called "teleport", "head end", "uplink facility", or "hub") has two components:

* Internet connection: The ISP's routers connect to proxy servers which can enforce quality of service (QoS) bandwidth limits and guarantees for user traffic. These are then connected to a DVB encapsulator which is then connected to a DVB-S modem. The radio frequency (RF) signal from the DVB-S modem is connected to an up converter which is connected via feed line to the outdoor unit.
* Satellite uplink: The block upconverter (BUC) and optional low-noise block converter (LNB), which may use a waveguide to connect to the optional orthomode transducer (OMT) which is bolted to the feed horn which is connected by metal supports to the satellite dish and mount.

At the remote location (Earth station) the setup consists of:

Outdoor unit
  • Satellite dish with mount
  • Feedhorn
  • Universal LNB, for Ku band.
  • Feed line
Indoor unit
  • DVB-S Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) card internal to a computer
  • DVB external modem where an 8P8C (RJ-45) Ethernet port or a Universal Serial Bus (USB) port connects the modem to the computer

What is FTA ( Free To Air)

FTA in satellites come from Free To Air. FTA is TV and radio broadcasts are sent unencrypted and may be received via any suitable receiver. FTA is usually delivered by satellite television, but in various parts of the world with encrypted digital terrestrial television channels it is broadcast on UHF or VHF bands.

Although these channels are described as free, the viewer does in fact pay for them. Some are paid directly by payment of a licence fee (as in the case of the BBC) or voluntary donation (in the case of educational broadcasters like PBS), others indirectly by paying for consumer products and services where part of the cost goes toward television advertising and sponsorship (in the case of Japanese television broadcasters like TV Asahi and TV Tokyo which relies on sponsorship heavily).

Free-to-air is often used for international broadcasting. It is television's equivalent to shortwave radio.
